Lynchburg: A Virginia Main Street Community

Lynch's Landing is a volunteer and membership based organization. Since 2001, Lynch's Landing volunteers have contributed over 45,000 hours of service to projects for the redevelopment of historic Downtown Lynchburg. Volunteers contribute their time at one of the 25 events held annually downtown, or by serving on one of the Lynch's Landing committees.  Committees execute an annual action oriented workplan.

Since 1985, Virginia Main Street has been helping localities revitalize the economic vitality of downtown commercial districts. The results have been remarkable - - new businesses are opening, and investors are putting their money into once vacant buildings; tourists are visiting new shops and restaurants and residents are enjoying renewed community pride. Thousands of jobs have been created and more than $141 million in private money has been invested in Virginia's Main Street communities
since the program began. We will be using the successful four-point Main Street Approach:

Design - Enhance the visual quality of downtown by addressing all design elements to create an appealing environment. Lynchburg's downtown has a wealth of historic buildings and varied architectural styles. Our downtown is unique! From the James River to Court Street, we must clean it up, make it more pedestrian friendly, improve signage, rehabilitate deteriorating buildings, and make downtown functional and attractive. Volunteer opportunities include, but are not limited to:

  • Facade Grant Program
  • Operation Clean Sweep
  • Winter Lights

Promotion - Create and market a positive image based on the unique attributes of our downtown. We will work to correct misconceptions of downtown safety, educate our citizens about why downtown revitalization makes economic sense, and utilize all forms of media to spread the word about exciting things that are happening downtown. We will ensure that downtown is the center of our community for fun events and activities. Volunteer opportunities include, but are not limited to:

  • Friday Cheers(TM)
  • Retail Promotions
  • Holiday Traditions
  • The Batteau Festival
  • Marketing & Branding

Economic Restructuring - Strengthen downtown's existing economic assets and find new uses for old buildings. What types of businesses does our region need? Who shops downtown? Who would benefit from living downtown? What kinds of economic incentives will trigger investment? Questions like these will be answered through market research and analysis allowing us to help our existing businesses to become more successful and recruit new business to create a thriving commercial district. Volunteer opportunities include, but are not limited to:

  • Recruitment & Retention of Businesses
  • Quarterly Forums
  • Customer Service Training Seminar and Marketing Training

Organization - Establish consensus and cooperation by building effective partnerships among all downtown stakeholders and the citizens of Lynchburg. Successful downtown revitalization requires many groups and a broad base of community support all working together to realize the vision created in our Downtown Master Plan . Become a member of Lynch's Landing and be part of our efforts to revitalize downtown Lynchburg!

Volunteer opportunities include, but are not limited to:

  • Membership Campaign
  • Annual Meeting
  • Building Partnerships with Surrounding Historic Neighborhoods
