Academy of Fine Arts |
|
|
| |
The 1905 Academy of Music Theatre, located in downtown Lynchburg, is
one of Central Virginia's most notable historic treasures of the
last century. Now the only remaining of seven original Academy of
Music Theatres in the Commonwealth, this edifice boasted perfect
sight lines, extraordinary acoustics, and was Lynchburg's first
fully electrified building. The theatre hosted landmark performances
by artists who were vital to the evolution of the performing arts
in America, such as George M. Cohan, Will Rodgers, Paderewski, and
Ethel Barrymore, among many others. |

Monument Terrace |
|
|
| |
Extending from Church Street to Court Street with 139 steps, Monument Terrace was built
in 1924 as a memorial to citizens who fought and died in American
wars. At that time the original basin, located at the base of the
monument steps, was replaced with a listing of Lynchburg's World
War I dead and Charles Keck's representation of a doughboy, "The
Listening Post."

Langley Fountain |
|
|
| |
Photo taken by Daniel L. Garner
In 1984 citizens began talking about the idea of a fountain for the
James. One day when Mr. Bruton Langley was taking a walk along the
River he spotted the former base to the bridge and the wheels began
turning. When Mr. Langley approached local companies for support
they were more than happy to help. Three years later and with a
donation of $113,000 by Mr. Langley and matching amounts of labor
and materials from local companies we have a new landmark that will
be enjoyed by the citizens of Central Virginia and visitors to our
City for many years to come. It is also the tallest fountain on
the East Coast. |
